Here Comes the Breadman

This article really brings me back to my hometown where I can see the Indians baking loaves of nice smell bread from their antique oven along Penang Road. This Chinese Man in this picture was not in my memory before as I have never seen Chinese Uncles doing such business. Would you want to buy from him if you see him around?

With his trusted partner: The freshly baked breads are taken around Kuala Langat township in his old beige coloured Morris Minor. Wong Look Ching carries the bread in rattan baskets to be sold to housewives and coffee shops.
BANTING'S Bread Man – Wong Look Ching goes around the Kuala Langat township in his 1963 Morris Minor, selling his loaves for RM1.60 each making it a wise choice for many housewives.

Bread, the staple diet for most Malaysians has seen an increase of 30-sen since last week, but Wong, 77, does not want to jump into the price hike bandwagon.

“Baking breads, buns and cakes is a first love for me. At my age, the aim is not to make money but just enjoy seeing families including their children having Chop Hup Seng's bread for breakfast,” he said.

Hot from the oven: Wong Look Ching, 77, taking out the freshly baked bread from the charcoal oven.
His bakery, which began in 1958, is housed in a terrace shop house along Jalan Morib.

Tan Lay Chen, 30, and her friend Zairah Abdul Razak, 27, said they couldn’t live without the bread.

“Wong's bread taste heavenly with his home-made kaya and pricing is nominal compared to popular brands,” said both the women.

Loved by many: Yoong Wei, 5, finds the slice of bread and home made kaya from Chop Hup Seng Bakery a real treat for breakfast.
Kuala Langat Community and Economic bureau researcher Dr N. Pathmanabhan said consumers are now choosing to support their local traditional bakeries thus empowering the local businesses to offer reasonable prices.

Pasta Zanmai @ Promenade, I Utama Shopping Complex, Petaling Jaya

Looking around for food during dinner time is really interesting for our family members. Some may like to have eastern while minority prefer western. So when there is no decision made, normally DD will be the decision-maker because everyone gotto 'listen' to him or else...... So we it's Japanese pasta!

Soup Asari Pasta at RM25.00 comes with pasta, clams and fresh mushroom. A pasta noodles soup is now available at a 5 days old Japanese Restaurant at Promenade, I Utama Shopping Complex, PJ. It came with a large bowl of pasta, soup and sea food. The taste is average at this newly opened Retail cum Japanese Restaurant.

Curry Beef Rice at RM22.00 is a common rice with sliced beef cooked with Japanese recipe curry. It tasted as good as those available at most Japanese Restaurant. At Pasta Zanmai Restaurant, you can buy those packet curry paste home if you wish to do your own cooking.

Curry Deep Fried Cheese Rice at RM18.00 is ideal for the light-meal-eater. This dish is something light, no meat but cheese to pamper the like-to-eat deep fried stuff to savour the crunchiness with some nice curry flavour. Something different for modern Japanese Food.

Wafu Ebi Ika Pasta at RM28.00 is something new in a Pasta Menu . Dare to try because she is always so in love with prawns. She ordered because she was actually attracted by the prawns image. The taste does not match her usual taste-buds and perhaps she only enjoyed the prawns.

YK Hotate at RM12.00, a side order with strong sweet sauce flavour.

Agedashi Tofu @ RM8.00 is served in quite a big portion at this Restaurant.

Ice-Cream named Sansu Mori at RM12.00 came with 3 flavours. Chocolate, green tea and black sesame flavour. Something nice and cute to savour.

"Pasta Zanbai is branch restaurant to Zen Japanese Restaurant at Sunway Resort Hotel and another one at Sri Hartamas. We wanted to try out Pasta here", said Mr Tom the Restaurant Manager when he approached us to evaluate the food taste.

As we chatted along, we asked and he promoted his new restaurant concept. What a creative and lucrative business in attracting shoppers to buy Japanese products displayed like in Japan product store. But, if you are not observant, you may miss the Restaurant as the sign board is not signing that there is a Restuarant inside. If you look further inside, you can see the Chef hard at "wok services" from the glass kitchen.

Dongzhi Festival 2007

Dongzhi or TangChek falls on every 22nd December each year. This means all Chinese celebrating this festival will start rolling these beautiful glutinous balls last night or early in the morning. One will eat them last night at 12.01am or this morning which marks a Dōngzhì Festival or Winter Solstice Festival. You will be older by 1 year as many Chinese Grandmas used to say it to their grandchildrens.

This year we rolled bigger balls. We finished rolling, blanching and quick boiling in pandan sweet syrup within 2 hours. Five sweet colours for this year's Tang Yuen Festival. Read more from my 2006 post. Time past by so fast and it's another year of Dongzhi Festival.

Got this from United Subang jaya Forum and there are recipes
and discusions on TangYuen Makings

Beancurd Hakka Yong Tao Foo

Hakka Yong Tao Foo (Hakka Beancurd Flling) is a nice dish where most Hakkas (Hakka is one of our chinese dialects) love to cook for a big family. This food is quite difficult to prepare as it involves lots of ingredients, preparation and cooking time. Normally, the Hakkas will cook plenty of this dish and kept them for a few days for better preserve taste and flavours.

Cut veges and beancurds ready for meat, raw and salted fish and filling.

This delicious dish is very nice to eat with white rice. It has the combination taste of bitter gourd, capsicum, brinjal, red chillies and the must have beancurds. With the minced meat and fish added with some salted fish, the taste is simply superb. You must not minus or forget these main ingredients. Otherwise, the taste won't match and you will not get the original taste of Hakka Yong Tao Foo.

Co Do Vietnamese Restaurant@ Mid Valley, KL

When December comes, Kuala Lumpur is usually crowded with shoppers and at the same time with the school holidays on the beat, many like to visit big malls putting up expensive and beautifully decorated Christmas trees. The most popular one so far is Mid Valley, Kuala Lumpur.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

See, almost everyone were fascinated with the beautiful deco. They were seen queing up to snap
nice shots with whatever camera they have. It's 4 pm and we were hungry for food. We were not interested to pose for photos but managed to get a quick shot on this pic. So, tea time at Co Do, OK?

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Co Do is a Vietnamese Restaurant at Mid Valley. Vermicelli Beef with plenty of snack food at RM35.00 meant for 2 pax is our first choice.

As for this serving, one could be confused what to eat first and next. The polite Mynamar Waiter served us by transferring the spring rolls and Chicken Meat Ball Sticks and Luncheon Meat onto 3 separate plates. He carefully served the vermicelli in a smaller bowl, then garnished them with shredded vege and cucumber. Next, he added some grounded peanuts, onion crisps and a scoop of diluted Vietnamese sweet and sour chilly sauce.

He served us and the main snack foods were quite nice to eat with the sweet and sour soupy noodles. The tastes were authentic when you bite them with the basil leaves which is a must for Thai and Vietnam food. The leaves added flavour to your taste glands. Do you realize it? Eat more, grandmas said they are good for white blood cells.

This spring rolls were not oily nor heavy as after we stuffed ourselves with these foods, we could still go for other light food at 7.0opm again.

Hot Pot Beef at RM15.00 is ideal for lunch as it came with big portion of rice topped with lemon grass beef, salads of lettuce, star fruits and celeries. It tasted good and the food presentation is a little bit like the Japanese serving but of course both foods differ in taste. What secret ah?

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I like this Ham Meat Roll served with bean sprouts, garlic and onion crisps. When you dip the ham meat roll into the chilly sauce, you really got to eat the real taste of Vietnam food. I will eat this again, if I am a lone ranger at Mid Valley someday.

The exterior of Co Do at Lot T-052, Level 3, Mid Valley, 59200 Kuala Lumpur. The restaurant is relatively small but they serve you with a "SMILE". Smiles will make your food taste better.
