THIS VALUE-FOR-MONEY food outlet, relocated from the former Penang Siah Boey wholesale market, was opened by current owner Tan Sai Im’s great grandfather in the early 1950s. At that time, most of their customers were wholesale traders, tongkang (boat) workers and nearby residents of inner Georgetown. Siah Boey Ah Xan Rice House had also been run by Tan Lee Seang (Sai Im’s father who is semi-retired but still cooks) and his grandfather Tan Kai Beng. It was very popular and opened its doors very early each day to cater to its working class and petit bourgeois clientele. In July 2004, the wholesale market was relocated and Ah Xan Rice House moved its present premises at nearby Jalan Magazine. Sai Im who cooks with the help of his father, Lee Seang, is assisted by other family members and staff. They still serve over 60 dishes a day including chicken, pork, fish, seafood, mutton, vegetables and beancurd.
